Split – Rijeka

Train from Split to Rijeka is a route that connects the biggest cities of Dalmatia and Istria region. The route is operated by Hrvatske Željeznice with 2 daily departures. However, there are no direct trains from Split to Rijeka, all departures require one or more train changes

NOTE: All departures include a train change in Oštarije, but the train never continues the same day!

The train departs from Split Main Train Station close to the city centre of Split, right next to the main bus station and the ferry port. The train arrives at Rijeka Main Train Station located close to the centre of Rijeka. The train makes a stop at more than 30 railway stations in between.

Since travelling by train hardly makes sense, consider taking a bus from Split to Rijeka, There are up to 9 daily departures, including a night bus. Tickets start from €20 and the journey takes around 8 hours.

Types of trains

There are two types of trains operating the route – InterCity (IC) trains and regular trains. However, these trains are always combined in a single departure. Usually, the first or the middle part of the route from Split is operated by Intercity trains, the rest is operated by regular trains. 

Remember, the train change in Oštarije means you continue your journey tomorrow, not the same day. 

The waiting time for other trains where there are multiple changes takes only a few minutes. Accordingly, the overall journey takes approximately 12-28 hours. 

NOTE: In some cases, passengers who bought a train ticket might be transferred by bus instead, either some part or the entire route. This happens when a certain part of the railway on the route is under construction, which is highly influenced by the air temperature. Summer heats can cause the railway to extend which leads to malfunctions, while extremely low temperatures in winter shrink the railway which can lead to breakage.

A regular price of a one-way ticket is around 214 HRK (~ €28). 

Children between the age of 6 and 12, students and seniors have a 50% discount while youth between the age of 12 and 26 have a 30% discount.
